A sky filter is a low level color correction filter (conversion filter), which is used primarily in color photography. In some shooting situations there is a very high proportion of blue in the ambient light. Especially around midday there is the danger that images will end up with a bluish tone. The filter's slightly red tone works against this effect, and gives the image an additional warmth. This reduces or completely offsets the blue tones. Sky filters are also useful for portraits as they can give skin tones a warm tone, if this is desired. These filters are especially suitable for photography with digital cameras, as the effect is often neutralized during exposure of negatives when the laboratory optimizes the prints. The final colors are therefore more dependent on image processing by the enlargement machines than on the filters. Lens filters by Heliopan are well-known for their material quality and workmanship. High-quality hardened Schottglas, framed by a brass ring, and everything "made in Germany" are the characteristics of a Heliopan filter. The hardening is so durable that it manages to withstand many types of cleaning. The soft metal of the brass filter frame is "self-forging" and thus has the advantage that it doesn't jam when being screwed on or off, as can sometimes be the case with certain aluminum threads.
